Offshore History: Early Offshore Pylon Rig on Lake Barre Early 1950s

Vast saltwater lakes and shallow water marshes were no obstacle when it came to drilling and producing oil. Drilling platforms constructed on timber pilings introduced in the 1930s were still being used in the 1950s in 10-15 feet of water. Courtesy of The Sloane Gallery – – 281-496-2212

The Sloane Gallery contains images of Houston from the early 1900s thru the 1980s.
